After Bathing At Baxter's is Jefferson Airplane's most adventurous studio statement, taking the San Francisco sound well beyond concise pop-rock into freewheeling psychedelia and acid-rock experimentation. Issued in 1967, it followed the breakthrough success of Surrealistic Pillow and showed a band willing to trade accessibility for risk, stretching arrangements, textures and song forms across material such as The Ballad Of You & Me & Pooneil, Rejoyce and Won't You Try. The result is one of the era's most uncompromising major-label psychedelic albums, capturing the moment when West Coast rock became stranger, louder and more inward-looking without losing its sense of urgency.
