    Tin Drum is Japan’s most distinctive album and a high point of art-pop new wave. Released in 1981, it refines the band’s elegant synth-driven sound into something leaner, stranger and more assured, with David Sylvian’s cool vocal delivery set against Mick Karn’s expressive fretless bass and exoticist colourings. The record brought together sleek pop discipline and experimental textures on songs such as Ghosts, Visions of China and Canton, helping make Japan one of the most individual British bands of the era. Often regarded as the group’s finest achievement, it remains a landmark of early-80s stylised pop.
