About this album

Control is the album that made Janet Jackson a star in her own right, turning a third-record reboot into one of the defining pop statements of the 1980s. Released in 1986, it paired her with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, whose crisp production fused Minneapolis sound, funk, synth-pop and the emerging New Jack Swing style. The result is a sharp, confident record built on independence, attitude and immaculate hooks, from Nasty and What Have You Done for Me Lately to When I Think of You. Its crossover success and lasting influence helped set the tone for modern R&B and pop.
