Released in 1976, the album introduced Pastorius’s astonishing technique, melodic imagination and rhythmic drive in a setting that moved easily between jazz, funk and Latin influences. His reading of Donna Lee, the lyric beauty of Portrait of Tracy and the tightly wound energy of Come On, Come Over helped establish a new vocabulary for modern bass playing. Widely regarded as one of the most influential fusion albums of the 1970s, it announced a musician whose impact reached far beyond jazz.
