    A Fickle Sonance is a strong hard bop set from Jackie McLean, marked by the altoist’s taut tone and restless melodic ideas. Recorded in 1962, it finds McLean in a concise small-group format that balances angular writing with swing and drive, moving easily between blues feeling and cooler, more probing passages. The title track and pieces such as “Five Will Get You Ten” and “Lost” show why McLean became one of the most distinctive voices of post-bop jazz: incisive, searching and unmistakably modern, yet firmly rooted in the hard bop tradition. It is a compact but revealing album from a key period in his early-1960s output.
