Mascis is best known as the frontman of the influential indie rock trio Dinosaur Jr, but he is also active as a solo artist, producer and film composer. He began his career as a founding member of the hardcore band Deep Wound.
Dinosaur Jr. was formed in 1984 and went on to become one of the most respected bands in alternative rock. By reintroducing volume and aggression into his songs, Mascis broke away from the strict confines of early 1980s hardcore and became an influencer for the burgeoning grunge movement. Mascis' work continues to inspire a whole generation of guitarists and songwriters to this day.
in 1997, Mascis disbanded Dinosaur Jr. and in 2000 he released "More Light", his first recording under the name J Mascis + The Fog. Members and contributors to The Fog included Mike Watt (Minutemen / flREHOSE), Ron Asheton (The Stooges), Robert Pollard (Guided By Voices), Kevin Shields (My Bloody Valentine), Dave Schools (Hard Working Americans / Widespread Panic) and Kyle Spence (Harvey Milk). the album "Free So Free" followed in 2002.
