Iron Maiden's Powerslave arrived in 1984 as the band's fifth studio album, at a point when their line-up had finally stabilised and their sound felt fully locked in. It is the record that turned Iron Maiden's mix of galloping rhythms, twin-guitar detail and large-scale storytelling into something especially complete, from the wartime charge of “Aces High” to the apocalyptic hook of “2 Minutes to Midnight.” The album's Ancient Egyptian imagery, drawn from the title track, also shaped the vast World Slavery Tour that followed.
What makes Powerslave endure is the way it balances immediacy with ambition. Alongside the band's sharpest singles, it closes with “Rime of the Ancient Mariner,” a 13-minute retelling of Coleridge that remained Iron Maiden's longest song for more than 30 years. It is also their last studio album to include an instrumental, and one of the clearest snapshots of the classic Dickinson-era line-up working at full confidence.
This 2024 vinyl edition brings back one of the key Maiden records in a version cut from the original analogue master tapes. If you want the album that many fans and critics point to when explaining why Iron Maiden mattered far beyond the first wave of British metal, this is an easy place to start.
