About this album

River Deep-Mountain High is a landmark Ike & Tina Turner album, pairing Tina Turner’s ferocious vocal power with Phil Spector’s famous Wall of Sound production. Released in 1966, it turned a singles-led act into the centre of one of pop’s great high-drama records, with the title song becoming the duo’s signature statement. The album combines gospel-shaded soul, rhythm and blues urgency and blockbuster studio craft, making it a key release in both Spector’s catalogue and the Turner story. Though it initially underperformed in the US, it later became widely recognised as one of the defining soul records of the 1960s.
