Zombie Birdhouse is one of Iggy Pop’s most adventurous solo records, sharpening his post-punk bite with wiry hooks, bleak wit and restless studio experimentation. Released in 1982, it was produced by Chris Stein of Blondie and marked by contributions from the Art of Noise, giving the album a fractured, modern feel that set it apart from his earlier work. Songs such as Run Like a Villain and The Villagers show Pop balancing menace, absurdity and melody, while the record’s raw energy helped secure its cult reputation as an underrated early-’80s statement from one of rock’s most fearless frontmen.
