Little Shop Of Horrors is a gleefully twisted soundtrack-musical that helped turn a stage oddity into a lasting cult favourite. Alan Menken’s tuneful, Motown-leaning score and Howard Ashman’s comic, sharply observed lyrics give the songs real theatrical bite, from the rueful Skid Row (Downtown) to the showstopping Suddenly, Seymour. Released in 1986 alongside Frank Oz’s film adaptation, the music keeps the original off-Broadway spirit intact while expanding its reach for a wider audience. Its blend of horror, humour and classic musical craft made it one of the most distinctive screen musicals of the 1980s.
