A visit to Brazil sparked Horace Silver's interest in his Portuguese roots and led to the magnificent "Song For My Father", his most enduring composition. This album also introduced his new band with Joe Henderson and Carmell Jones and features the classic band with Blue Mitchell and Junior Cook.
A decade into his recording career, pianist Horace Silver created this album that would become the crown jewel of his body of hard bop classics. "Song for My Father" documents the transition of his quintet with two tracks from an October 1963 session with Blue Mitchell, Junior Cook, Gene Taylor and Roy Brooks. A year later, Silver returned to the Van Gelder Studio with a new band consisting of Carmell Jones, Joe Henderson, Teddy Smith and Roger Humphries. This session yielded four more tracks, including the one that would become his trademark: "Song for My Father", a composition dedicated to his father, inspired by both his Cape Verdean roots and the music Silver had discovered on a trip to Brazil.
