  • Hole – Pretty on the Inside arrived in 1991 as the band’s debut album, right in the thick of the early ’90s underground, and it still sounds abrasive in a very specific, purposeful way. Produced by Kim Gordon and Don Fleming, it introduced the original Hole lineup of Courtney Love, Eric Erlandson, Jill Emery and Caroline Rue, and set out the mix of noise rock, punk and alternative rock that the group would sharpen in later releases.

What makes this record stick is how raw its attack feels without sounding accidental. The guitars scrape and lurch, the rhythm section pushes hard, and Love’s vocals come through as confrontational rather than polished, giving the album a jagged intensity that suits its subject matter. Even decades later, it reads less as a tidy debut than as a document of a band establishing its identity in public, with very little interest in smoothing the edges.

Pretty on the Inside also matters as the first full statement from a band that would become one of the defining names in alternative rock. If you know Hole mainly from what came later, this is the sound of the blueprint: fiercer, noisier and more underground, but already fully committed to the uncompromising approach that made the band stand out in the first place.
