    Maiden Voyage is a landmark in Herbie Hancock’s 1960s Blue Note run, and one of the clearest statements of modal jazz in the post-bop era. Recorded in 1965 with Freddie Hubbard, George Coleman, Ron Carter and Tony Williams, the album blends compositional discipline with freedom, giving each player room to expand the music without losing its cool, lucid shape. The title track and pieces such as Dolphin Dance became modern jazz standards, admired for their harmonic poise and lyrical invention. Widely regarded as one of Hancock’s defining albums, it helped extend hard bop into more open, atmospheric territory.
