Grateful Dead – Merriweather 6/30/85 (4xLP, Box Set)

Grateful Dead's Merriweather 6/30/85 captures the band's complete June 30, 1985 show at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Maryland, and makes it available as a standalone vinyl release for the first time after its earlier appearance in the Summer Magic 1985 20-CD box. That matters because 1985 is one of the more debated periods in the Dead's long live history: a rough-edged, late-era stretch that still produced nights Dead Heads return to for sheer lift-off and chemistry.

This set makes its case through performance rather than mythology. The first set moves from country-rock and blues staples into a hard-earned groove, while the second leans into the band's elastic, open-ended playing. "Shakedown Street" is the obvious talking point, long prized by fans as one of the great 1980s versions, but it's the overall shape of the concert that really lands: "Cryptical Envelopment" resurfaces to open up the jam sequence, "Drums" and "Space" deepen the atmosphere, and the closing run through "Sugar Magnolia" and "U.S. Blues" gives the night a proper release.

For vinyl, the important detail is that this edition was sourced from the original Sony F1 tapes, mastered by GRAMMY Award-winning engineer David Glasser, and produced for release by Grateful Dead archivist and legacy manager David Lemieux. New artwork by Marcos Alvarado helps frame it not just as another archive dip, but as a thoughtfully presented document from a year that still sparks strong feelings among Dead listeners.
