Released in 1980, it moved her away from straightforward club fare into a tense blend of new wave, dub, funk and reggae, with Jones’s commanding delivery giving even borrowed material a chilling authority. The title track, ‘Private Life’ and her version of ‘Love Is the Drug’ helped define the album’s clipped, minimalist edge, while its cool detachment and rhythmic bite became central to her image and influence. It remains one of the key statements in her early catalogue.
