About this album
Out of the Cool is Gil Evans’ masterful post-bop statement, and one of the great orchestral jazz albums of the early 1960s. Recorded in 1960 and released in 1961, it captures Evans pushing big-band language into more open, modern territory, with long-form writing and shifting textures rather than routine swing arrangements. The album’s centrepiece, “La Nevada”, unfolds with remarkable patience and colour, while the programme also includes Evans’ imaginative takes on material such as “Where Flamingos Fly” and “Bilbao Song”. Widely regarded as a high point in Evans’ career, it helped redefine what a jazz orchestra could sound like in the post-bop era.
