Trespass marks the moment Genesis began to define its progressive identity, moving beyond British folk-rock into longer, more ambitious forms. Released in 1970, it was the band’s second album and the last with original guitarist Anthony Phillips, whose intricate acoustic and electric textures helped shape its distinctive sound. Tracks such as The Knife and Stagnation reveal the mix of pastoral lyricism, dramatic shifts and adventurous arrangement that would become central to Genesis’s early reputation. Though still relatively understated compared with later prog epics, the album is a key early statement from one of England’s most influential progressive bands.
