About this album
Abacab is a key transitional album in Genesis’s evolution, sharpening their post-prog sound into something leaner, punchier and more commercial without abandoning experiment. Issued in 1981, it followed the success of Duke and was shaped by the band’s own production, with the group leaning into new studio textures, gated drums and brighter keyboards. The title track, “No Reply At All” and “Keep It Dark” helped define the album’s mix of taut pop, rhythmic tension and sly eccentricity, while longer pieces such as “Dodo/Lurker” preserved traces of their earlier complexity. The result became one of Genesis’s most distinctive early-’80s statements.
