Valley of the Dolls is Generation X at their most focused, sharpening punk energy with a cleaner new wave edge. Released in 1979, the album shows Billy Idol, Tony James and company broadening their sound without losing the snap and attitude that made them stand out in the late-1970s London scene. Songs such as King Rocker and the title track balance melodic hooks with urgency, giving the record a stronger pop sense than many of their peers. It captures a band moving beyond raw rebellion towards a more defined, commercially aware form of post-punk rock.
