In 2011, Toronto-based Fucked Up released an album that shattered the conceptual boundaries of punk rock—a series of songs that explored unexpected instrumentation, psychedelic drifts, and Situationist philosophy. Their ambition was boundless, and the running time was opulent. In other words, they made a concept album. *David Comes To Life* is a story about lost love, global meltdown, depression, bombs, guilt, and madness. Or is it? The four-part piece is a modern moral tale set against the bleak backdrop of a British industrial city in the late 1970s, tracing the dark moods and inner psyche of the title character. At the same time, the narrator’s reliability is called into question. The tables are turned, responsibility shifts, and the story becomes a meta-story. Of course, you can also simply ignore the backstory and listen to an imaginative double album of fast-paced, melodic rock ’n’ roll, laced with all sorts of psychological madness.
