4 is the album that turned Foreigner from hard rock contenders into one of the biggest bands of the early 1980s. Released in 1981, it sharpened their sound into lean, radio-ready arena rock without losing the bite of Mick Jones and Lou Gramm’s songwriting partnership. Recorded with producer Mutt Lange, the album delivered some of their best-known songs, including Juke Box Hero, Urgent and Waiting for a Girl Like You, and spent weeks near the top of the charts in several countries. Its blend of muscular guitars, polished hooks and melodic polish helped define mainstream rock at the dawn of the MTV era.
