About this album
Focus II sharpened Focus’s symphonic prog identity into one of the most distinctive Dutch progressive rock albums of the era. Issued in 1971, it mixed muscular riffs, classical-influenced arrangements and extended instrumental passages with Thijs van Leer’s flute, Hammond organ and unforgettably eccentric vocals. The album’s breakout track, Hocus Pocus, became an international calling card, helping the band reach a far wider rock audience than many of their prog peers. Alongside that hit, the record balances lyrical pieces and ambitious suite-like writing, making it a landmark release in the development of European symphonic rock and one of Focus’s most enduring statements.
