Focus 3 is the ambitious breakthrough that turned Focus’s virtuosic blend of prog rock, jazz, blues and classical ideas into a far broader international statement. Released in 1972, the album captures the Dutch group at full stretch, balancing extended instrumental workouts with concise melodic hooks. Anchored by Thijs van Leer’s flute and organ, Jan Akkerman’s guitar and the band’s dramatic shifts in mood and tempo, it helped define early 1970s European progressive rock. Best known for the enduring single Sylvia, the album also shows Focus expanding their range through pieces such as Carnival Fugue and Hocus Pocus-style contrasts, combining technical flair with memorable themes.
