About this album
Love Not Money finds Everything But The Girl widening their sound without losing the intimacy that defined them. Their second album, released in 1985, pairs Tracey Thorn’s clear, unsentimental vocals with Ben Watt’s increasingly assured writing and arrangements, moving beyond acoustic chamber-pop into brighter, more pointed pop rock. Songs such as Ballad Of The Times and When All’s Well show a band more interested in social observation and melodic discipline than easy sentiment. It is a key early statement in the duo’s catalogue, marking the step from elegant indie-pop promise towards a broader, more distinctive artistic identity.
