Concert By The Sea is Erroll Garner’s most celebrated recording and a landmark live jazz album. Captured in 1955 at a seaside concert in Carmel, California, and released in 1956, it turned Garner’s remarkable left-hand drive and buoyant right-hand phrasing into a broad public triumph. Anchored by long, flowing improvisations on standards such as ‘I’ll Remember April’ and ‘Autumn Leaves’, the album highlights his instinct for melody, rhythm and surprise without ever sounding forced. Its popularity helped make Garner one of the era’s most distinctive pianists and gave post-bop listeners a durable classic of lyrical, crowd-pleasing jazz.
