Featuring Hubbard alongside Jaki Byard, George Tucker and Roy Haynes, the session captures a group of formidable improvisers pushing the music beyond convention without losing swing or melody. Dolphy’s alto saxophone, bass clarinet and flute give the album its distinctive voice, while pieces such as G.W. and Glad To Be Unhappy show how sharply he could balance structure and risk. It remains one of the key early documents of his singular sound and adventurous vision.
