The Black-Man's Burdon is a daring, uneven but fascinating 1970 collaboration that pushes Eric Burdon and War beyond straightforward blues-rock into jazz, funk and political experimentation. Following the breakthrough success of War's debut with Burdon, the album was issued the same year and expanded their sound with longer, looser arrangements and sharper social commentary. Its version of Paint It Black and the sprawling Black On Black In Black show the group working at the edge of blues-rock, while the record's genre-mixing ambition helped define Burdon's brief but potent partnership with the band. It remains one of the era's most distinctive crossovers.
