About this album
The Circus sharpened Erasure’s bright synth-pop into one of the defining British electronic pop albums of the 1980s. Released in 1987, the duo’s second album followed their breakthrough with a more assured blend of melody, romance and dance-floor urgency. Built around Vince Clarke’s agile electronic arrangements and Andy Bell’s expressive voice, it produced enduring fan favourites such as It Doesn’t Have To Be, Sometimes and Victim of Love. The album helped cement Erasure’s place in the UK pop mainstream while also showing how sleek synthesiser pop could be emotionally direct, commercially potent and unmistakably stylish.
