En Vogue – Funky Divas (Music On Vinyl)

En Vogue's Funky Divas arrived in 1992, right as hip-hop-inflected R&B was becoming pop’s new center, and it captures the group at the peak of that shift. Their second album was their biggest commercial and critical success, debuting at No. 1 on the US Billboard R&B albums chart and reaching No. 8 on the Billboard 200. More importantly, it shows how En Vogue could bring precision harmony to music that also pulled in soul, pop, dance, hip-hop, and even hard rock textures.

The album produced five hit singles, with three crossing into the pop Top 10, and it still plays like a statement of range rather than a grab-bag of styles. “My Lovin’ (You’re Never Gonna Get It)” became one of the biggest hits of 1992, while “Giving Him Something He Can Feel” reworked the Curtis Mayfield song with a sleek, sophisticated touch. “Free Your Mind” gave the album a sharper social edge too: in the aftermath of the 1992 Los Angeles riots, its call to confront racism and prejudice clearly struck a national nerve.

That mix of vocal control, crossover songwriting, and cultural timing is what makes Funky Divas such a strong snapshot of early-90s R&B. Much of the writing came from Thomas McElroy and Denzil Foster, whose partnership with En Vogue helped define the group’s sound, but the record never feels narrow. It is polished, varied, and full of the confidence that made En Vogue central to the era.
