About this album
Emerson, Lake & Palmer’s debut is a landmark of early prog rock, introducing one of the genre’s most flamboyant and technically gifted trios. Released in 1970, the album set out the band’s signature mix of classical reference, heavy riffs and extended virtuosity, with Keith Emerson’s keyboard pyrotechnics, Greg Lake’s melodic bass and vocals, and Carl Palmer’s dynamic drumming forming a tightly controlled but adventurous sound. “Lucky Man” gave the record a memorable single and one of the group’s most enduring songs, while longer pieces such as “Take a Pebble” and “Knife-Edge” showed how far the band could stretch rock arrangement and ambition.
