Get Happy!! is a brisk, brilliant statement from Elvis Costello & The Attractions, widely regarded as one of Costello’s finest albums. Released in 1980, it pushed his post-punk energy towards Stax and Motown-inspired soul, with rapid-fire melodies, clipped guitar lines and taut keyboard work from Steve Nieve and the Attractions. The double album’s compact songs and bitter wit gave Costello a new rhythmic drive without softening his lyrical edge, and tracks such as “Love For Tender”, “New Amsterdam” and “I Can’t Stand Up For Falling Down” helped define its shape. Its restless style and sharp hook writing made it a key new wave release.
