Spike is one of Elvis Costello’s most ambitious late-1980s albums, pairing sharp satire with unusually wide-ranging songcraft. Released in 1989, it finds him working with producer and longtime collaborator T Bone Burnett on a record that moves from barbed rock and roll to acoustic balladry, brassier pop and pointed political commentary. Songs such as Veronica, Tramp The Dirt Down and Let Him Dangle show Costello at his most direct and inventive, balancing wit, anger and melodic instinct. The result helped confirm his reputation as one of British rock’s most literate and restless songwriters, with a scope that reaches well beyond new wave orthodoxy.
