    Empty Sky is a stark and promising debut from Elton John, showing the young songwriter still shaping the sound that would soon make him a star. Issued in 1969, before his breakthrough with self-titled and Tumbleweed Connection, the album leans towards earthy folk-rock and moody balladry rather than the grander style of his later classics. Written with lyricist Bernie Taupin and produced by Gus Dudgeon’s predecessor work in a more stripped-back setting, it already reveals the melodic instinct and emotional directness that would define Elton’s early peak. Songs such as the title track and Skyline Pigeon point clearly towards his future.
