About this album
Porgy & Bess is a landmark 1959 collaboration that unites Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong in one of jazz’s most distinctive Gershwin interpretations. The album draws on the music of George and Ira Gershwin’s folk opera and turns it into a remarkably natural meeting point between Fitzgerald’s immaculate phrasing and Armstrong’s earthy, expressive trumpet and vocals. Produced for Verve and arranged to suit both artists’ strengths, it helped bring songs like Summertime, Bess, You Is My Woman Now and It Ain’t Necessarily So to a wider popular audience. Its blend of swing, theatre and vocal storytelling has made it one of the duo’s best-known recordings.
