At Newport is an LP by Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday released on the Verve Records label.
About this album
At Newport captures two of jazz’s greatest voices in a landmark 1958 live setting. Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday each bring distinct phrasing, emotional range and stage presence to a programme drawn from swing standards, ballads and bop-era repertoire, showing how differently they could turn familiar material into something personal. Issued in the Newport Jazz Festival context, the album reflects a moment when vocal jazz still commanded major cultural attention and helped define the modern American songbook. Its mix of elegance, grit and improvisational instinct makes it an essential document of mid-century jazz singing.
