Eddie Gale – Black Rhythm Happening (Blue Note Classic)

Eddie Gale's Black Rhythm Happening was recorded in 1969 as the trumpeter's second Blue Note album, extending the socially engaged vision of Ghetto Music into something more communal and ceremonial. Gale brings in the Noble Gale Musicians and Noble Gale Singers, and that blend matters: this is jazz shaped as much by group chant, church feeling and collective purpose as by solo improvisation.

The music draws its force from that wide frame. The title track is built around an emphatic refrain, while Song of Will strips things back to something austere and deeply felt.
