Heaven Up Here sharpened Echo & The Bunnymen’s post-punk ambitions into one of the defining British albums of the early 1980s. Released in 1981, their second studio album pushed beyond the brooding debut towards a harder, more expansive sound, driven by Ian McCulloch’s grave vocal delivery, Will Sergeant’s angular guitar work and a rhythm section that gave the songs real momentum. Tracks such as Show of Strength, A Promise and The Disease helped establish the band as major figures in the new wave and indie rock landscape. The album’s bleak energy and melodic force made it a key influence on later alternative guitar bands.
