Earth, Wind & Fire's All 'N All arrived in 1977 at a peak moment for the band, extending the run that made Maurice White's group one of the defining crossover acts of the decade. Often cited as one of their best-known albums, it paired chart power with a wider musical reach: the R&B hits “Fantasy” and “Serpentine Fire” sit alongside jazzier instrumentals, lush ballads, and the band’s trademark blend of funk, soul, pop, disco, and Latin colour.
That range is what makes the record last. White’s background as a session drummer helps drive the album’s rhythmic snap, while Philip Bailey brings real lift to “I’ll Write A Song For You.” Elsewhere, “Jupiter” pushes the tougher side of the group’s funk, and arranger Eumir Deodato contributes to the album’s rich orchestral feel. It is a big, carefully shaped studio album, but never loses the sense of groove underneath the detail.
All 'N All was a major commercial success, reaching triple-platinum status worldwide, and it earned substantial recognition in its own time: Earth, Wind & Fire won the Grammy for Best R&B Vocal Performance by a Duo, Group or Chorus, while “Runnin’” took Best R&B Instrumental in 1978. This Music On Vinyl edition brings back the album in a form that suits its scale, with the original sequence spread across a sturdy audiophile pressing.
