Hotel California is the Eagles’ defining statement, the album that crystallised their polished blend of country rock and hard-edged California rock. Released in 1976, it followed the huge success of One of These Nights and showed the group broadening from easy harmony hits into a darker, more ambitious sound. Anchored by the title track, New Kid in Town and Life in the Fast Lane, the record paired immaculate vocal work with songs about fame, excess and disillusionment. Its commercial success and lasting airplay made it one of the most recognisable rock albums of the 1970s.
