Dusty In Memphis is Dusty Springfield’s defining album and one of the great soul-pop records of the 1960s. Recorded in Memphis and New York with production by Jerry Wexler, Arif Mardin and Tom Dowd, it paired Springfield’s rich, emotionally precise voice with the Muscle Shoals rhythm section and elegant Atlantic arrangements. The result gave her the American breakthrough she had long sought, and helped cement Son of a Preacher Man as her signature song. Widely regarded as a landmark of sophisticated crossover pop, the album captures Springfield at her most assured and remains central to her legacy.
