Duffy – Rockferry

Duffy's Rockferry arrived in March 2008 and quickly became one of the defining British pop debuts of its moment, opening at No. 1 on the UK albums chart and staying there for five weeks. Built from soul, pop and blues influences, it introduced Aimee Anne Duffy's unmistakable voice in a set that felt steeped in classic songcraft without sounding like a museum piece.

The album's character owes a great deal to Duffy's long collaboration with Bernard Butler, who helped shape its warm, dramatic sound as producer, arranger and guitarist, alongside Steve Booker, Jimmy Hogarth and Eg White. Songs such as Mercy, Warwick Avenue and Stepping Stone show both sides of the record: sharp, immediate pop hooks and a more restrained, heart-on-sleeve melancholy. String arrangements, piano, percussion and backing vocals from David McAlmont add to the retro-soul richness without overwhelming the songs.

Rockferry became a major international success, selling more than 2 million copies in the UK and over 7 million worldwide. It also picked up three BRIT Awards and the Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Album, which helps explain why this debut still stands as the key Duffy album for many listeners. This edition presents the original 10-track album on vinyl.
