Dr. John – Gris-Gris Gumbo Ya Ya: Singles 1968-1974 (2xLP)

Dr. John's Gris-Gris Gumbo Ya Ya: Singles 1968-1974 collects 26 A- and B-sides from the years when Mac Rebennack turned his New Orleans roots into the strange, sly world of Dr. John the Night Tripper. Drawn from his early Atco/Atlantic run, it traces the stretch that began with 1968's Gris Gris, the debut that introduced his swampy blend of R&B, blues, jazz, funk, rock and voodoo theatre to a much wider audience.

Rather than retelling the albums in full, this set focuses on the single story: hit sides like “Right Place Wrong Time,” which reached No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1973, sit alongside “Iko Iko,” “Such a Night,” and rarer single edits and promo-style versions that are not the usual way this material is heard. That makes it a sharp overview of how Dr. John’s music moved between radio-ready cuts, deep New Orleans groove, and the more offbeat atmosphere of his classic LPs.

It also works as a reminder of how rich this period was. Gris Gris and Dr. John’s Gumbo both later appeared in Rolling Stone’s Top 500 Albums of All Time, while songs from these years kept travelling far beyond their original singles. For longtime fans, this is a focused archive of the early Atlantic years; for newcomers, it is an inviting way into one of New Orleans music’s most distinctive catalogues.
