Sloppy Seconds is a sharply written, good-humoured early album from Dr. Hook & The Medicine Show, sharpening the band’s mix of rock and roll, country bite and satirical wit. Issued in 1972, it found the group building on the success of their debut with a looser, more assured sound that balanced barroom energy with memorable melodies. Songs such as “Carry Me, Carrie” and the notorious “The Cover of ‘Rolling Stone’” helped define their comic edge and radio appeal, while the record’s blend of grit and singalong hooks made the band stand out in early-70s American rock. It remains one of their most recognisable releases.
