About this album
The Chronic is Dr. Dre’s landmark debut as a solo artist and a defining statement of West Coast hip-hop. Released in 1992, it helped popularise G-funk by pairing laid-back funk samples, deep bass and crisp drum programming with Dre’s patient, controlled production. The album also introduced a new generation of listeners to Snoop Doggy Dogg and established Death Row Records as a dominant force in rap. With its blend of menace, humour and immaculate studio craft, The Chronic became one of the most influential hip-hop albums of the 1990s and a template for mainstream gangsta rap.
