Dr. Dre – Compton (2xLP)

Dr. Dre's Compton arrived in 2015 as his first album in 16 years, created after the long-delayed Detox was abandoned and sparked by the making of the Straight Outta Compton film. Rather than sounding like a nostalgia exercise, it plays like a late-career reset: a record that looks back at Dre's origins while testing how his production style fits a new rap generation. That tension gives the album its shape, with Dre framing Compton not just as a place but as the centre of his own story.

The cast tells you a lot about how the record works. West Coast mainstays like Ice Cube, Snoop Dogg, Xzibit and The Game appear alongside Kendrick Lamar, Anderson .Paak, King Mez, Justus, Marsha Ambrosius and Eminem, turning the album into a survey of Dre's world past and present. The production is equally wide-ranging: live bass, keys, brass and strings sit next to offbeat sample choices, giving tracks like Deep Water, Genocide and Talking To My Diary a dense, cinematic feel rather than a straightforward throwback sound.

What makes Compton especially interesting in Dre's catalogue is that it feels less like a victory lap than a final statement. Contemporary reviews praised how energised and current it sounded, even while it reflected on N.W.A., Aftermath and the long shadow of Dre's earlier work. On vinyl, it's a substantial, feature-heavy listen that rewards hearing the album as a full sequence rather than just a set of guest spots.
