Once Upon a Time... shows Donna Summer and producers Giorgio Moroder and Pete Bellotte stretching disco into a full-scale narrative concept album. Released in 1977, the double LP frames Summer’s voice through a fairy-tale storyline, with the title suite, ‘Working the Midnight Shift’ and ‘I Love You’ moving between club pulse, theatrical drama and emotional immediacy. Rather than a loose collection of dance tracks, it helped prove that disco could sustain ambition, sequence and character as well as a floor-filling beat. The result is one of Summer’s most distinctive early statements, capturing the genre at its most expansive and cinematic.
