Dinosaur Jr. – There Near

Finally! The sixth studio album that Dinosaur Jr. has recorded in the 20 years since their triumphant comeback is being released: “There Near”!

“There Near” was created during short, intense creative sessions over the course of a year at Bisquiteen Studio in Amherst and was recorded almost exclusively by the core Dino trio—the king of the drums, Murph, the human tornado Lou Barlow on bass and vocals, and the inimitable J Mascis on guitar and vocals—supplemented by a bit of piano and organ work from local musical maestro Ken Mauri. And the album rages from start to finish.

Trying to define the essence of Dino’s sound is never easy. At first glance, it’s a recognizable mix of laid-back vocals, sharp guitars, and an animalistic rhythm section, yet these parts come together to form a whole that is far more magical and exciting than the sum of its parts. J’s guitar sound on “There Near” is consistently even more animalistic than usual, which may be partly due to the fact that he’s playing through a recently acquired 1970s Mesa Boogie MK 1 amplifier.

“There Near” continues Dinosaur Jr.’s series of classic albums. With their monstrous riffs booming from the live stage, the new songs are sure to sound fantastic alongside their historic predecessors.
