    About this album

    Bug is the album that turned Dinosaur Jr. into one of alternative rock’s defining bands. Released in 1988, it sharpened J Mascis’s contrast of bruising guitar noise and unexpectedly melodic songcraft, with Lou Barlow and Murph locking in a taut, volatile rhythm section. The record’s best-known song, Freak Scene, became a college-rock anthem and helped widen the group’s audience, while the rest of the album pushed indie rock toward a louder, rougher and more emotionally exposed edge. Bug is widely regarded as a key release in the late-1980s alternative rock movement.
