Duty Now For The Future finds Devo sharpening their art-punk satire without losing the nervous humour that made them stand out in late-1970s rock. Released in 1979, it followed their breakthrough debut and pushed their clipped rhythms, synth squalls and absurdist social commentary into a more streamlined major-label setting. The album’s mechanical pulse and deadpan delivery helped define new wave’s colder, stranger edge, while songs such as Smart Patrol/Mr. DNA and Blockhead show how Devo turned corporate paranoia, conformity and modern alienation into something danceable as well as unsettling. It remains one of the group’s key statements.
