Black Celebration is the album where Depeche Mode fully embraced darkness without losing pop instinct. Released in 1986, it deepened the band’s shift from bright electronic singles into a colder, more dramatic sound world, with Martin Gore’s songwriting and Alan Wilder’s increasingly central production role helping define its brooding identity. The title track, ‘Stripped’, ‘A Question of Lust’ and ‘A Question of Time’ show how the group could make melody, tension and restraint work together, laying groundwork for the moodier electronic music that followed. Widely regarded as one of their key mid-’80s records, it marked a major creative step forward.
